BUPS STEM Program

The B.U.P.S. STEM program is preparing the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

In today’s STEM lesson we overheard a Grade 1 student comment: “this is better than an ipad”, as 25 students are fully absorbed in watching a silkworm larvae munch hungrily through a mulberry leaf. The students have been following the progress of the silkworm eggs hatching and the astounding growth of the world’s fastest growing animal. They pat its cool, soft, vulnerable skin, noting its circular eating motion, wonder how many eyes it has, find it has left a tiny thread of silk behind, question the function of a horn near its tail, and cheer wildly as it unashamedly poops before their eyes. Today, the students will conclude their learning by modelling the 4 stages of the life cycle with playdough and comparing it to the mealworms which have just emerged from their pupa- as a darkling beetle. If this is better than an ipad, wait till the silkworm spins a cocoon and emerges as a cute little moth.

Our hands-on STEM program weaves together the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, offering an exciting educational experience that extends well beyond traditional educational practices. With a foundation of inquiry-based learning, our program encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines that inspire creativity, critical thinking, and develop problem-solving skills.

In the field of biological sciences, students explore the wonders of living things. Through hands-on activities, they investigate the intricacies of ecosystems and make observations about experiments and investigations. The program fosters a sense of discovery, encouraging students to ask questions and explore possibilities.

The physical sciences have students engaging in experiments that bring theoretical concepts to life. From measuring forces to constructing simple machines and experimenting with magnets and electricity, the program develops an appreciation of the world of physics and encourages active participation in the process of scientific discovery.

Students consider their own place in space amongst the planets and stars, in earth and space sciences, while also examining the geological formations beneath their feet. Students explore the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems, instilling a sense of wonder and curiosity.

The chemical sciences engage students in the fascinating world of chemical reactions and introduces the properties of matter. Through hands-on exploration, they develop an appreciation for the differences between physical and chemical changes.

Engineering is a key part of our STEM program, transforming students into problem-solving architects. They tackle real-world challenges, such as building bridges and towers, while collaborating on other engineering challenges such as marble runs.

The program encourages a mindset of exploration, discovery, and excitement, shaping students into individuals who have the skills and flexibility to excel in an ever changing world.
