Our writers are inspired and creative. They have an authentic purpose for writing and are able to take risks confidently when exploring different writing purposes.
Through feedback, they use the writing process to enhance their own voice, making conscious choices about sentences and words

The writing process at BUPS is consistent from Prep to Grade 6, with the complexity of skills as a writer increasing at students learn and progress.

    • Writing process Students follow the BUPS writing process, to produce pieces of writing with the focus on quality text and developing student’s skills. Students develop an idea based on their interests, use their thinking to develop a purpose for their writing and then create a plan to organise their thoughts. They begin their draft, continually editing and revising to improve the quality of their work, whilst receiving teacher feedback for continuous improvement. Students are then able to publish their writing if they choose to.
    • 6 plus 1 traits – At BUPS, we use the 6 plus 1 traits as essential skills for our writers to learn and develop. These consist of Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, and Conventions, with Presentation being the plus 1. This language is used throughout the school and progresses as students continue to learn.
    • Spelling – At BUPS, students are explicitly taught spelling conventions and rules, given opportunities to practice these understandings with a range of words and then apply their knowledge during the writing process.
    • Handwriting – In the early years of primary school, it is essential that students develop correct formation of letters and fluency and control when writing. At BUPS, we use a systematic approach that flows from Prep throughout the school, to ensure students handwriting is automatic when writing, so that the quality of ideas and writing is at the forefront for students to focus on.
